A regular touring bike just won't cut it. You're planning something far more ambitious. A round-the-world ride. A transcontinental trek. An open-ended bicycle-mounted wander. You need a special grade of touring bicycle – one that'll fit you perfectly, tackle everything, and last forever.

Our expedition bikes are designed for long journeys of the most demanding kind.

The bikes were conceived and designed by a seasoned world cycle traveller on a mission to create the ultimate world touring bike. Each one that leaves our workshop has been individually custom-built to be the best possible touring bike for your journey, wherever in the world you're going.

Tom's Expedition Bike 3-up

When we build you an expedition bike, we do it with your top priorities in mind.

1. Comfort

You're going to live on your bike. So we don't force all our choices upon you. We'll get you in, size you up, listen to your plans. You'll try out as many saddles, handlebars and riding positions as you need to until you feel comfortable. Then we'll build you a bike like no other.

2. Reliability

You'll want to ride as far as possible before your bike needs attention. So we've done our research. We've spent years on the road. We've consulted hundreds of cyclists. Then we've selected each part for its proven durability – right down to the smallest bolt.

3. Value For Money

We won't waste your money on pricey, short-lived 'upgrades'. Our expedition bike is built upon established technologies and parts that'll be replaceable wherever you are in the world. If we've done our job well, it'll be the last touring bike you'll ever need.

How do we know what your priorities are going to be? Simple. We've been there ourselves.

Tom Allen cycling in Sudan

We ride and build touring bikes for a living. Here's our story.

Bike designer Tom Allen cycled tens of thousands of miles on 5 continents through the most extreme of environments. Then he designed us the bike he'd choose to do it all over again. His meticulously thought-out specification incorporates not only his own hard-earned lessons but those of the hundreds of other cyclists he's consulted during 8 years of running the popular cycle touring website TomsBikeTrip.com.

Bicycle builder Richard Delacour is the founder of Oxford Bike Works, an independent bicycle building company putting hundreds of individually-shaped riders on individually-built bikes – happy customers now touring the globe. Richard teamed up with Tom to prototype, test and finally launch this world touring bike in the UK, hand-building each bike to the exact specifications of the person most qualified to make the final call – you.

When it comes to understanding and serving your needs, then, we'd like to think we're pretty well placed.

What exactly sets our expedition bike apart?

Our bike outclasses almost every other tourer in satisfying the specific needs of long-term, world-ranging, fully-loaded bicycle travellers. From the overall vision to the tiniest details, we've been obscenely pedantic in our choices – yet we also know where the final word should be yours.

Want something extra special? We'll build it for you.

Our standard build specification includes everything you'll need for a full-on expedition across the globe. But if there's anything you want to add or change, all you have to do is ask. That's the beauty of a custom-built touring bike: it'll truly be your own.

Riding Styles

We recommend flat or riser bars for a balance of comfort and efficiency. But if you're set on dropped handlebars, butterfly bars, or anything else you've got your eye on, we'll adapt our build to incorporate them. It's what we do.

Gearing Systems

Our bike comes with a durable 8-speed Shimano drivetrain for minimal maintenance and maximum part compatibility. But if you're sold on a Rohloff Speedhub, or want to up the gearing to a 9- or 10-speed setup, that's not a problem.

Gadget Power

We're big fans of keeping things simple. But we know you might want to use that pedalling to power your mobile devices. And because each wheel is built to order, all it takes is a nod to get a dynamo hub fitted and keep you juiced up.

These are just a few of the possibilities. We'll happily tell you what we think is best (and why), but at the end of the day, we're here to give you precisely what you ask for.

But remember – this is your bike, so you can change anything you want. (Or you can simply let us do what we do best: build you a touring bike to last a lifetime.)
